- Factors I look for before investing, acquiring, or advising a business:
1) Strong and ethical leadership - I prefer businesses led by founders or management teams with integrity, resilience, and a long-term mindset. I invest in people first, businesses second.
2) Proven demand- I am looking for businesses with demonstrated customer demand rather than concepts that rely heavily on future projections. A growing customer base and repeat purchases are strong indicators.
3) Scalable business model- I favour businesses that can grow beyond the founder through systems, SOPs, technology, branding, and talent development.
4) Healthy unit economics- I am looking for businesses with sustainable gross margins, positive cash flow, and a clear path to profitability. Growth without profitability is generally less attractive.
5) Competitive advantage- This may come from brand strength, technology, exclusive partnerships, operational excellence, distribution networks, intellectual property, or customer loyalty.
6) Industry growth potential- I prefer industries with long-term growth tailwinds such as tourism, hospitality, food & beverage, technology-enabled services, e-commerce infrastructure, education, healthcare, and business services.
7) Ability to create value- I am most interested in situations where my experience in operations, marketing, digitalisation, technology, scaling, and leadership development can accelerate growth after investment.
