I prefer to invest in already profitable or in experienced business where the owner wants to expand. I'm an investor and prefer to have equity or share in exchange. Want an experienced person to run the business. I also prefer not to interfere in day-to-day operations and want to help the business owners by infusing capital and the right contacts. If someone is getting started with his or her first business, I might be interested, provided that, I like the idea that the person and the capital will be an interest free debt and in exchange, I will get share or equity. When I'm investing, I'm investing in an experienced team, not in a business involved in a price war with the competition, not dependent on the key customer, and profitable.
